How to turn on "classic" logon screen (instead of that one "with pictures") ?
Hello! Does anybody know how to enable "classic" logon screen on Vista Business computer in a workgroup (NOT in a domain) ? I do not want the users seeall accounts' names when they logging on.

Hi, Thank you for your post. To enable Ctrl-Alt-Del logon on Windows Vista Business computer, please perform the following steps: 1. Logon the system with an administrator account. 2. Type secpol.msc in the Start Search box, and press Enter. 3. In the Local Security Policy window, navigate to Local Policies \ Security Options, double-click the policy Interactive Logon: Do not display last user name" and change the setting to Enable. 4. Type gpupdate.exe in the Start Search box to apply the policy. Hope it helps. Sincerely, Joson Zhou Microsoft Online Community Support

And if you actually want them to have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to login, while you are in there you also need to set "Interactive Login: Do not require Ctrl+Alt+Del" to Disabled.

I did all this and I still get the Pictures. I have set these options in GPEDIT SECPOL and verified the settings in the registry. I am using Vista Ultimate. What am I missing. I want the good old boring windows logon box.

You won't be able to get the "old boring windows logon box". At best, you'll be able to make them use CTRL+ALT+DEL, and get rid of the list of users and pictures. If the local security policy changes didn't do it, you mightneed to disable fast user switching as well. Click Start, gpedit.msc, go toAdministrative Templates -> System -> Logon, setHide entry points for Fast User Switching to Enabled and set Always use classic logon to Enabled. Hope this helps.

I am working in a test environment with Server 2008 x64 and have been attempting to get my servers setup to require CTRL+ALT+DEL and not display the username. I have applied all the settings described in this article, but I am still presented the list of usernames and never prompted to press CTRL+ALT+DEL. I have tried this on several different servers, both physical and virtual, with the same results. I really need these settings to actually be appplied and provide the expected behavior to get an automated test tool to function correctly. All the systemsI have been working with are Enterprise versions of Server 2008.I have tried them both in a workgroup and as part of a domain. Does anyone know if these settings work differently on the Standard and Datacenter editions?

I see that I'm not alone in wanting my operating system to behave in an adult manner. I don't want an "avator" nor a flowered background. Just a black background with textboxes for username and password. The best I can do is create a solid background for each screen resolution I may need (a real good use of my time) and stare at an empty "picture frame". Would you pleaseaddress this, Microsoft? It's bad enough to search and search for things which have been changed for no good reason, but this childish login reassures me that Microsoft has misplaced priorities each time I login.

Thank you! This trick worked for Windows 7 Professional, too! I had previously gone into the registry to get CTRL+ALT_DELETE to show, but was still getting the last username instead of the clean boxes I had hoped for. -AA

Nope, this may work in Vista but not Windows 7 Pro. MS has made numerious stupid changes for the sake of security. My clients are being forced to stay with XP until it totally dies.

Leave it to MS to come create the best Windows OS yet "7" and then make simple configuration and Admin issues difficult to impossible. PS: We are replacing our XP boxes with "7" and I have discussed this numerious times with MS Support and they agree that "7" is cripled in many ways on purpose.
